I’ve always been fascinated by the connection we can have with our animals. There are moments when you look into their eyes and there’s a real understanding there, and you can sense their consciousness, their soul. That’s what I wanted to capture in this piece: not simply a portrait of a horse, but that brief moment when you connect and recognize something in each other. I also loved the idea of creating an equine moment of the majestic presence of a horse but not done in a predictable style of painting.
I built the piece slowly, creating layers of texture and allowing some areas to stay raw and imperfect while others became more refined. I finished the horse in oils, using softer layers of color, shadow and light to bring him forward from the textured surface.
